Windfalls

It's incredibly hard
watching someone else
walking the path
I carved out for myself.

In our domain,
we must take initiative
and grasp any opportunity we can.
Try as I might,
he always gets there first;
grasps the low-hanging fruit
while I scrabble about
collecting windfalls.

He is free to do what he likes
and I try not to behave
as though it's a competition.
Anyway, It's hard to resent somebody
so personable and pleasant.

Every day, I try to be gracious and grateful,
but sometimes that wears thin.;
he's cruising along the road I helped to build
while I stumble on rough terrain.

I do not know for sure
whether the difference between us
is in character or skill.
Regardless, it's a difficult place to be
when I catch him with his hand
in my bucket of windfalls.

And so,
I'm forging a new path.
