Elemental



The immature sun sits high in the sky
playing its game like some spoiled, bastard child.
Sympathetic clouds try to cover it up
but the damned sun only laughs in its omnipotence
knowing the clouds must drift past in time.

King Aeolus deems it so.

The clouds do slowly drift,
clutching to not let it be so
but they fail as clouds tend to do.
At least part of the time anyway.

Disheveled people strain to continue this thing we call life.
Some are smart enough to stay inside as much as possible.
Others burn.
Still others die.

First the skin burns.
Then it begins to boil and peel after a time,
peeling more and more until all that is left
is a dead, disgusting mass of what once was
a person or some other kind of an animal.

Bones and dead flesh.
Small pieces blow by,
subservient to that damned Aeolus.

All the while, up above, the sun beams and beams in all its glory.
A wicked, bratty little face shining in the center,
evil eyebrows drawn down.
The little brat!

It wants to get closer and closer!
Burn everyone, everything!
This entire little planet we like to call home.
But it cannot, not yet and it knows it!
No, not just yet.

In so many billion years it will devour the Earth,
all the while smacking its fiery lips!
“Boy, was that tasty!”
But for now it can only play the game.
Its game.

The game we are required to play along with the little bastard.

We are chess pieces but mere pawns.

That beaming brat burning in our sky,
that beaming brat is the king
but one, in all its glory
that we will never put in check-mate.
