Boketto Binoculars
Before the bedraggled tide
Drinks herself back to the bar
And my mind nestles in silent stupor,
There will be moments of execution.
And here, aside this wall
That was forest once,
Palimpsest of deep winters remember
Leaves pressed in stone books.
And here with the seaweed & plastic sushi,
Exhalations of sand, lifeboat towing swollen ropes,
With the finished, fleeting sailings,
Thoughts leave me.
.
.
.
.
Is there enough time
To restore damaged furniture
And call this house
A home?
Drinks herself back to the bar
And my mind nestles in silent stupor,
There will be moments of execution.
And here, aside this wall
That was forest once,
Palimpsest of deep winters remember
Leaves pressed in stone books.
And here with the seaweed & plastic sushi,
Exhalations of sand, lifeboat towing swollen ropes,
With the finished, fleeting sailings,
Thoughts leave me.

Is there enough time
To restore damaged furniture
And call this house
A home?

Re. Boketto Binoculars
The enormous emotional impact of your piece is just a brilliant juxtaposition of your title's meaning /explanation of the Japanese term Boketto and the crisis of shameful pollution.
I feel such power here and how this beautifully and poetically sums up the damage we humans are doing to the oceans and the way it is unfortunately viewed by many; where it's something that is gazed at vacantly, without thinking... period.
What a stroke of genius awareness evoking poeting .... all while keeping it a truly gorgeous write at the same time.
Outstanding work, imo

An incredibly insightful & appreciated comment. Omitted the line – “sewage of suffering” – as it was bit unsubtle. One day nature will have just had enough.

I’d remove the comma after “house” in the last verse for the purpose of flow. I’m also not sure why there’s so much white space between the last verse and the rest of the piece, but I’m a bit dense and fuddy-duddy about visual choices in poetry.
The poem as a whole I adore. It’s gentle and melancholic in the best sort of Larkin-esque way. Intensely imagistic and emotional, conveying so much through landscape and evocative detail. I find it really moving on a deeply personal level.

Diolch. I've taken your comment on board about that last comma. Don't get many comments, but those I do receive are worth their weight in gold.
The white stuff is supposed to represent the act of boketto. Not sure it feasible to completely clear mind of all thought. In distant past, spent w/end in Cotswolds (don't ask) on transcedental-medication course. Even have me on mantra thing. Lol

I've done a lot of meditating to develop quiet mind, which is something that comes and goes, like anything else. I love the alchemical transformations found in this and your writing on the whole, the sense of the personal imbued in the milieu, the emotional presence and what is left unsaid beneath, the metaphors are beautifully struck, voice has a profound solemnity. The above comments sounded out wonderful insights I think.

Always appreciated my friend. You have a delightful ability to articulate your insight and empathy. Tis a gift.
I struggle with meditation as my mind is like a whirling washing machine. In the few times when I been sat on the analyst couch, there are deliberate silences which are supposed to hold grand moments of epiphany, but my mind drifts all over.

I know what you mean. Couple of things I learned to make meditation work are allow or as the dude says abide lol. Guide thoughts back to breath a thousand thousand times without judging them or yourself. It's amazing what a small oasis of non judgment can provide the rest of the day, even in those high stress moments, perhaps a smidge more capacity.
Just my experience not a pat on the analysts couch 😅🙏

Many thanks R. Truly appreciated. Guess the boketto could be perceived as a form of scrying. Never did achieve my ancestor's ability to tea read. Just looked like a peat bog in the cup - maybe that was symbolic of something. Lol.
