Struck

a bolt of lightning hit me yesterday

a friend casually observed
how gaunt a homeless cat was

i kept breathing
kept walking

it's inconvenient to fall to the ground
when struck down by sadness

clouds gathered that evening
in the filthy searing sky
it seemed a haboob was forming
-yes a real word-
a powerful dust storm
instead of much needed rain
it happens here in the desert
where life is best suited
to prickly plant life
creatures with deadly stings
and rich people who play tennis in Scottsdale

but no
it was a normal storm
thunder
lightning
rhythmic raindrops
reflecting in the pool's LED lights
purple
blue
green
a non-cloying shade of pink

a streak of grey
flashes by
the gaunt cat
scrurrying
terrified
seeking shelter

once again
a lightning bolt hits my gut

i die on the inside

and keep breathing
