To Be Wanted
To Be Wanted
No one wants
to be
the consolation prize,
not to be
the one
in her eyes,
not to have
that central
core space,
the reason
the moonlight
wakes up on her face.
The boxes
she keeps
in her underwear drawer
are filled
with the letters
of dreams of still more.
And every sad look
of having
just settled
reminds
of fourth place,
not even medaled.
No one wants
to be
the consolation prize,
not to be
the one
in her eyes,
not to have
that central
core space,
the reason
the moonlight
wakes up on her face.
The boxes
she keeps
in her underwear drawer
are filled
with the letters
of dreams of still more.
And every sad look
of having
just settled
reminds
of fourth place,
not even medaled.
