i feel like a vowel today
like a flaccid letter between
clacking consonants
bit dull
but necessary
not quite enough
to make up
a meaningful word
alone
except you
or i
neither of which
is really enough either
as we both know
vowels wait for another letter
to carry them
flourishing in the spaces
between corners
to create ambience
rather than
sharply
impressing on meaning
they’re where a word breaks
where emphasis peaks
in a yawning, or a thought
not quite formed
lazy little middles
for the tongue
aye &oui &yea
today i
am just a vowel

(Urghhh…Last time I checked vowels with lips didn’t deserve casual misogyny… but here we are fkn living it…😏)
There’s something I love about poetry that takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary. What I loved about this (and the first time it was read) was that idea of a poet becoming their own language. How intertwined that is with the psyche. And that’s the magic here.
The short, concise lines really work here. They communicate like individual thoughts. Passing ideas. The complete lack of punctuation here also cements that beautifully.
I enjoyed this offering. It was something different to the usual with a lot of angles to consider. Cheers and stuff.

Thank you, yes. I'd never noticed vowels with lips, but I'll be keeping an eye on them from now on, when they have to walk anywhere alone at night.
