A battle in both directions...the status quo may eat you up alive inside v. the vigilance of letting go and not getting sucked back in...and still surviving.

One time, an expensive psychiatrist asked me
"Do you believe in life after death?"
"Asshole", I thought, "I'm paying you for such stupidity?"
So I said to him:
"Look, doctor. You're over there and I'm over here. If I drop dead in this chair right now, what will happen? You will get up, call an ambulance, they'll come, make a record of it, take away the corpse and another patient will come in, sit down, and start talking. That proves, beyond doubt, that there is life after death."
There is no spacious free-of-me void. There is no such thing as a void. It is a concept, like zero, which never exists and always exists, but either way it serves a conceptual purpose. There are, however situations that are indescribable. Void and no-thing, that's just 2500 year old language that people used to make arguments about impermanence because they didn't have the technology of external memory, like books, or like your camera to illustrate the ideas of permance and impermanence. Further, we know now as they did then, that all matter serves as a memory device whether you want it to or not.
This desire to find that place that is free-of-me, is a weariness or a boredom with your self, with your perspective which is your self. It is the desire for a better view, one without sorrow. Ginsberg said "I can't stand my own mind." He was weary of his vision, his mind.
No, there is no void. The Buddha showed this during his life, as he proved the nihlists of his day to be in error. Nor is there only matter, as he proved the hedonists of his day to also be in error. The only thing one may be free of, finally, is perspective. But the number of perspectives is limitless, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges. To be finally unburdened of 'yours' may be a relief, but there is no void.
