A Memory of Burning Steel

- A Memory of Burning Steel -

How ancient was that imperious hand that so did govern,
The stars of worlds beyond the knowing of those on Terra!
The shadows cast by they who walked where suns did burn,
Over alien sands, where the walls of palaces in a grand era...
Rose towering across landscapes bathed in colors unknown.
Above them, stars of different constellations so brightly shone!
Yellow stones laid upon dark earth, on planets holy of old,
To create temples of religions never heard of by any human!
The greatest lay by the shores of the last waters to stay cold,
Upon a crimson desert where winds howled like the damned...
Strange the sound, stranger still the music within those halls.
The chanting of immortals in a cosmic harmony that ever calls!

The ancient machines remembered their fleshly attendants,
Teaching them the incantations to bring them thus remotely!
A thousand years had passed, since passed were the secrets,
Of a universe that existed before a previous cycle's destiny...
Led it to an ending that went unseen by any currently alive.
When time is broken, the truth remains, where divines thrive!
Arcane were the whispers that brought me to my old form,
Now I was of flesh and sinew, once metal and steel of sorts!
The mechanical eyes regarded me as silence would a storm,
And silent were the artificial lips that made not any retorts...
For they were my own in times past, not ever to be so again.
I let the ancient me rest in state, for in that form I knew pain!

If steel could burn, would that form have known of agony,
As its' feet tread upon the sands of a world grown merciless?
Darkened was the sky, the clouds ominous in cruel dignity,
Whilst the winds laughed, to see that planet's dire distress...
In the valley where the gods of old were laid to final sleep.
There did I tread, and there I left the ringing cliffs so steep!
Do not seek out the resting places of the deities' repose,
Only memories still live in that most forbidden of places!
What need would man have for the histories of all those,
Who perished before the surface of Terra had life's graces...
The tattered royalty long passed into the shadows of time.
Until the death of that sacred planet, they slumber sublime!

There are places in the stars where the past contains life,
And on such worlds there are ghosts never reckoned with!
They wait in the darkness, in the places once full of strife,
To sing in the silence, and to bestow to the worthy a gift...
Of remembering, of connecting to a memory from before.
Let the memories flow as they will, from their alien shore!
