would you turn me away
for admitting that I sometimes think
that I could love a woman
like I’d love a man
just as I felt that I’d be turned away
for admitting that I thought
that I could love men
in ways that men love women
for admitting that I sometimes think

Hello there.
This was an easy reading list for me, because it questions some of the concepts of pride that people don’t talk about. I guess I like poems that get to the heart of the matter and this does, and does it well. As well as being vulnerable as fuck.
I (loosely) identify as pansexual queer these days — and even then I’m a bit of a muddle. Struggled with it all quite a lot over the last few years if I’m honest. And it constantly pisses me off that the most backlash I get is from the community, because I married a cis-man. Like I settled or something.
That’s just the person I love.
Mary Oliver says in her poem Wild Geese “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.” — and there’s never a truer word said. One I dearly hold on to.
What and who you love, is everybody else’s issue. Never yours.
Much to ponder here. Thank you for shining a light on it.

I love Wild Geese. Thank you for your lovely and thoughtful comment. I’ve never been to a Pride event because I’ve never really felt welcome, so a lot of your experience as you describe it strikes a chord with me.

For me the concept of sexuality has always been fluid, though I have often struggled to define myself by labels that actually fit.
I personally find it ridiculous that we can be judged and scorned by something as natural as attraction and love, especially those of us that are already oppressed by heteronormative values. We don't need to be oppressed by other oppressed people because we don't fit the mold society has set as a gold standard for us to be like.
I sometimes find the LGBTQI space a hard place to be in because there is that judgement if you don't fit neatly into one category or another.

Absolutely. From my own experience I’ve never always felt fully accepted because I don’t see myself as conventionally physically attractive, so it was uplifting for me a while back when I saw a woman in a wheelchair covered in rainbows, one painted on her face.
