Morning after

I'm that hangover in the morning
The voice of reason that reminds you nothing has changed
The voice that reminds you, none of your problems have gone away.

I'm the stain in an abstract art
That stain in your perfect past
The truth you can't wash away with another glass
To all the beautiful things, I'm the morning after

I'm that divorce after all the vows are said and done
The truth of the illusion you hide behind,
The other side of the veil of love.

I'm the empty space in your construct
All that lies behind all the walls you hide behind
The true you that lies behind your masks
To all that's beautiful, I'm the morning after.

I'm that early morning pregnancy test
From a one night stand
That clear HIV test
Filled with despair and regret.
Your bank account alert
When the well had dried up and dropped dead
But you are still left with thirst.
I'm the answer to "where are all my friends"
The sharp stab in your back
The realisation that you've fallen flat
And there's no one there
When you have nothing more left to share.

I'm that sin you can't take to church
The one that kills you, but you'd rather have the ugliness underneath your chest,
You are forever in my debt
But I'm still the monster you take to bed
Yet, after you've fooled yourself
Showered yourself in endless fantasies
I'm there to recollect
Forever in your company
That bitter consciousness
In all that's beautiful, I'm the morning after.
