Familiar Voices

trapped in a crowd of faces and hands
chattering words and making demands
tired of smiling, I need to get away
(wrap me in inky black velvet)

my only strength is my will to breathe
(reach for me in the shadows)

I’m waiting, lonely in the empty dark
waiting for their songs
to touch me

familiar voices pull me off the ledge
familiar voices soothe my weary soul
familiar voices sing me back to the light
familiar voices bring me back to whole

Author's Note
A love letter to musician and poet friends out here in the ether who keep me company and pick me up when times are rough. I appreciate you all and the familiarity of your "voices", whether sung or written.
