So maybe it’s just me,
but Harvey Fierstein’s slippers
in Torch Song Trilogy
are signs that it’s okay
to not be manly, like your dad,
like boys he wanted you to be.

Like the end-rhymes, AAA.
I had to look up: Harvey Fierstein, Torch Song Trilogy, and slippers.
Here HF & his slippers--an image from the cover art, I believe--function as a signifier, like a badge, or a meme even. Not of non-conformity (which may have been the original intent), but of masculinity.
The ending gives a twist of bittersweetness, the son who felt he didn't have his father's unconditional approval.
Who knows what's in a man's heart?
The Book says God does not see as a man sees, but looks upon the heart!
