The Last Hussar

A young man leads the charge.
On patrol north of Orleans.
Receives the Iron Cross.
This is just the beginning.

He rides into the fray.
Holding on to his faith.
In times of desperation.
He will always find a way.

The Last Hussar.
A title that will hold out through the war.
Commoner but he’s a rising star.
His leadership will take the nation far.
August von Mackensen, The Last Hussar.

Rider for life, he earned the name.
Changed the rules and played the game.
In death’s head uniform he came.
To bring victory, The Last Hussar remains.

All Europe is alight.
Waging a ruthless fight.
A leader looked upon.
As Prussia’s golden son.

At Gorlice and Tarnow.
A hunter on the track.
Retaking Przemysl.
He chased the Russians back.

Promoted to field marshal.
Awarded the Grand Cross.
Never defeated in battle.
Marasesti was not a loss.

Loyal to the monarchy.
Fought to preserve his homeland.
Stood against the Nazi Party.
And lived to see them meet their end.

To bring victory, The Last Hussar.

Author's Note
August von Mackensen was, as described in the song, a heroic warrior and general in WWI.
In WWII he was one of the few voices in Germany that stood against the Nazi Party, rejecting their every attempt to sway him. He saw the nazis defeated and crushed and passed away peacefully, and I imagine quite content, later that same year.
