seedtime & harvest

“What we plant in the soil of contemplation, we shall
reap in the harvest of action.”—Mesiter Eckhart

my weed seeds
drink the rain
and eat the fertile soil,
thus lavishing their appetite
till pregnant with weed grain.

too soon they
yield their crops,
fruiting the vast terrain.
from former rain and latter rain
their bumper harvest drops.

my word seeds
bless or curse
the ears on which they fall;
their yield may heal the aching heart
or render victims worse.

my deed seeds
dig my grave,
or elevate my soul;
compassion drops sweet mercy yields:
stark hunger they may stave.

my lifestyle
is a seed
sown in the soils of time;
my harvest is the Pleasant Land
where all my footsteps lead.
