So Close to Free

Layin' by the river a boy--so close to free.
The wind blows a wave along--and it's movin' me.
Water rolls along the rocks--and I feel it flow.
Time slips away from me--it hurts lettin’ go.
Pain inside washin' away--memories I know.
Brain denied another day--what is left of me?
Clouds tried to lead the way—to what I couldn’t see.
Fleeting times I wish were now--looking at my hand.
Laughter in the breeze again--toes in the sand.
Lone, by the river a boy--somewhere inside.
Each of us is holding on--through the tears denied.
Birds fly from tree to tree--and I understand.
Fight for honour, love and truth--such a spirit held in dear.
A child's hero rises up--covering the fear.
Leaves float high upon the sky--from here to there.
Water wells beneath the eye—sayin’ what words wouldn't dare.
A bird flies by the tree above—tracin’ shadows below.
So close to freedom--I love--but may never know.
Life set loose over my head—lyin’ aloft in softened air.
Leaves, birds, and clouds have led--a path I cannot share.
Long lost; a child we hide--somehow, it's true.
Deep down but close inside--both me and you.
Whispers call along the way—in silence as we grow.
A child's voice inside will say--never let me go.
