The masks I used to wear
I get out bed and look in the mirror and ask myself "which one should I wear today?"
What kind of persona do I want to display?
Do I want to show them how I truly feel?
Do I want them to see my depression is real?
I havent worn the mask echoing with laughter in awhile.
Or perhaps I should wear the mask with a painted on smile?

Personas are a wonderful topic--
Love the rhymed couplet in the beginning--
Wonderful phrase, "a painted-on smile" and a "mask echoing with laughter"...strong, evocative images.

Dear M,
I have a closet full of similar masks. Your poem is stunningly relatable and aims right for the truth. Especially when dealing with raw emotion. No one ever seems to want to speak the truth of their emotions and then move on to something else. It always seems to be glossed over with a phony “I’m fine” and bull dozed to a dung heap. I really appreciated this truthful approach to handling feelings. I think we have these different masks to allow us to change them as the day wears on. If I feel down it’s the sad one when I hit a good minute I switch it to the smiling one. I’m always in complete awe by your candor and writing. H🌷

A+ poem. Mask or no mask can hide the real you, you that must be faced every day. Fooling others reminds you are actually fooling yourself. Great and thought-provoking poem. Hugs and peace, (O)
