Side Eye Look
On a cold winter morning
There's a soliloquy of surprise
When the sun shines again
It gives a side eye look
To a changed world
Covered in snow.
Like an icecream caravan
Trees stand in the forest
Doing wonderful things
Without consciousness.
The loblolly and hemlocks
Now like pencil mustaches
And boar bristle brushes.
The sun shines in splendor
In the tall grass.
Sparkling prisms of tiny
Crystals capturing the light
Of a frozen world.
Winter can be harsh,
But it can be a good time
For honesty with everything
Laid bare.
The added weight
Slows down the world
Like an old man slouching
Toward retirement.
There are lessons to be learned
Without preaching.
You have to trust yourself.
Don't open the door too wide
Or keep it open too long.
Look at everything with the
Wonder of a child.
Sometimes the most important things
Happen that changes our life
And we don't know why.
If we don't appreciate them
Like the snow while it last
They just leave us numb,
Cold and bitter.
