Deep Cuts
.

.
.
I come from a time when we delved deep
Into a band’s L.P., Cassette, or C.D.
There was a ritual to opening a package
Then listening to an album in its entirety
The radio friendly hits were like appetizers
Songs which raised interest and curiosity
But an album gave a complete perspective
Discovering a recording artists’ virtuosity
In these deep cuts you’d uncover their talent
Compositions that displayed magical ingenuity
Hard work and passion poured onto projects
Into sessions where they showed creativity
I still dive into works that are not so popular
In awe of their brilliant musical abilities
I’m not a connoisseur but come from a time
When discovering music had many possibilities

I became a fan of Def Leppard listening to their Hysteria album. At a high school reunion, one girl said she remembers me every time she hears one of those songs.

That's pretty awesome. She'll think of you for the rest of her life whenever she hearts that son.
Maybe because I grew up in the 80s and 90s, the music from those decades were more special to me. Ah too be young again.

The music really triggers those memories and we travel back in time to those special places and faces.

This is great--yes, I remember, absolutely.
So much discovery back then--not just music, but a lot of things.
Having to search out & discover...
Enjoyed!

Thanks Mark.
I think as we come of age, the world gets bigger and we explore more, our minds capture more. The lyrics tend to hit differently too, the concerts, the friends, the memories.
Glad you enjoyed.

After Bathing at Baxters - 1967
JEFFERSON AIRPLANE
This was their follow-up to their commercial break out album
Surrealistic Pillow
There's not one hit on the album but it is an extraordinary album with many gems ......
Great poem Wally

Poet, thank you for the comment, the LIKE and RL.
I've always made it a habit that whenever someone suggest a movie, book or album I keep a list (yes, I'm a little weird that way). Books are harder to get to because they require more time, but a movie or an album, and with today's technology...
I'll be sure to add these to my list.
Thanks for sharing.

Remember when going to the record store was the highlight of the weekend?! I would save my allowance and babysit in order to have money to purchase new albums! And yes, getting home and putting them on was a ritual! Great retrospective piece here, Wally.

Ahavati, thanks for adding to your RL.
I did have a stanza in mind regarding the shopping process but I felt like I rushed through this piece because I was so excited. But yes! Tower Records, Amoeba Music, Sam Goody, those were the places for me.
There was something about going through the isles, looking at the covers, the smell of the vinyl, the posters on the walls, oh those were fun Saturday nights. Then after making the purchase, going home, removing the wrapper, put in the tape deck...
Fun times.

LOL! Right? The vinyl wasn't the only thing one could smell in Jay's record store!

Re. Deep Cuts
I almost miss the Columbia House tape mail membership... you'd get 12 tapes for like a penny in agreement for buying so many tapes there after and then your self selected genre pick was mailed every month automatically if you didn't cancel.... (I always forgot!) but the bonus was that I became familiar with some music that I wouldn't have otherwise, that's for sure!! Haha..... Ohhh hell yeah, I adored that pseudo scam mail subscription service.... lol...
It's part of my 80'experience, for sure!
It was right up there with going to the record store itself, looking for those rare collectibles of my favorites... the only place you could find stuff like that, pre-internet!
What a great write, Walter...nostalgia at it's best .... ha!... Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
So awesome.

Yes, I remember those, there were so many choices. And if you had a good radio station, you'd hear obscure indie bands that were coming up.
We were the MTV generation (when MTV played music videos of course).
Fun times.
Thanks for the RL.
