It was black & white
In the smoke & shadow
For old romantic drinkers
As they lay on their couches
Thinking of yesterday
Hoping they’d done better
And the fading light
Of night & day
Knew very little of it
Except when once she danced
And we crowded round to see
Violins in the background –
I believe they were gypsy
