Hairesy
Dark brown mane speckled gray
each melanin depleted strand
not simply evincing age
but observable symbols,
medals of valor
awarded for perseverance
amid trials, pain, and grief
merit marks of intense ecstasy
every patch of silvery hair
containing wisdom
sage advice
born of and nurtured by
lived experiences

medals of valor
awarded for perseverance
amid trials, pain, and grief
merit marks of intense ecstasy

Author's Note
This piece is inspired by LunaGreyhawks recent poem, "Haircut,"(https://deepundergroundpoetry.com/poems/419694-haircut/)
It compelled me to contemplate my own gray hairs and what they mean to me. The only thing I despise about gray hair is the wiriness and that it seems to have a penchant for disheveling misbehavior...like me actually. 😏😉

Makes life sound so loving... I've heard "she's a bitch and then you die." lol.

Thank you, Lj. I am glad that you like this. Life can definitely be as you describe but I hope we all experience a measure of happiness and hold on to that and let the bad go. Idealistic I know but hey a guy can dream, right?

Life isn't terrible...
I think of it as my children... that would come up to me and give me a lollipop but kick me in the shin and run...
love them at the end of the day anyway.

Medals of valor, indeed!!
I really enjoyed this write, BB. You absolutely nailed the distinguishment (and coveted side eye glances 😏) that men who are going a tad gray get in the minds of society. It's deserved and it's almost always attractive catnip....Purrrr!....😉 Whereas we women are just seen (usually it's the norm, but there are rare exceptions sure! ) as old and outdated..... sadly. Short changed....Dammit, society!! grrrrr.... Down with the patriarchy!!! ✊🏻✊🏻.... (I tease!)
Terrifically penned ink and I really dug the picture inclusion too!!!

Yeah but...I wanted it to read more universally, more not gender specific. That society and popular culture may view women with gray hair as old it's a feeling from within a sense of have earned the distinction no matter what others think or say. That was the feeling I got from Luna's piece.
I am thrilled that you like the piece, my goddess BB🐻💞🐰

Dear GW,
You’re rocking it! Grey is gorgeous. And I think embracing our age and experience is terrific. If only it wasn’t so physically painful. Another great write. H🌷
