the grisly misfortune of the way the world works
I wish I wasn't this ugly
that superficial didn't matter
and it was substance
which was cherished
not hair colour
body shape
or sexual promiscuity
That my ugly
wasn't the first thing seen
and I was listened to
with the same intensity
as anyone pretty
I wish I wasn't so ugly
and immediately ignored
that I didn't think of
the darkness like I do
letting it get to me
realizing the way the world is
versus how I perceive it
that ugly never overcomes
always having less opportunity
at life in general
Even this
small microcosm
begets that theory
correct.
That ugly
is an albatross
weighing
all it's
mighty pressure
pressing
down
hard upon...
... and
Oh my,
"Aren't you just
a handsome devil?"

I love Manson.... He's originally from FL and I have been going to shows since it was ' Marilyn Manson and The Spooky Kids'.... lol... and Yes, his ideas on beauty and how the masses, media, entertainment etc.. push a particular aesthetic, was one of the points of his 'shock' and the way he decided to look.... The Beautiful People was another shout out to that thinking... I love working out to that song! hahaha...
I thank you for reading, your generous comments and and the understanding that you just get it. I truly appreciate all your support, my friend 🙏🏻.

Re: Re. the grisly misfortune of the way the world works
Lol... thanks for the offer of assistance, ethan. It's much appreciated and made me smile ☺
Yes, that albatross is exactly what you say but is also my feelings of 'less than' and inadequacy inside and out....
I remember reading something that someone wrote (or said) once about how being thought of as beautiful was such a difficulty and a 'chore'. I am sure that's true, as it is about a lot of things. I'm not trying to diminish anyone's feelings of worth but I rarely read or hear about someone killing themselves because they're too pretty or too beautiful ... just saying.....
it's a true harsh issue, low self opinion and the covetous nature of society towards beauty. It permeates and ingrains. Teaching the youth of all stripes and make ups, that it's indeed 'in the eye of the beholder' and what is most important , almost seems futile but a total must!
I thank for reading and leaving your thoughtful insights for me to ponder. I value that so much 🙏🏻
Much love,

Dear BV,
What am I missing here? If you’re speaking metaphorically I relate- I’ve been ignored, overlooked, thrown over for the prettier girl. Society placing emphasis on the shallow fluff and ignoring the substance of someone.
If you’re speaking literally? Nuh uh. Not having it. No sale. Especially when you use your real image for your avatar. On my best day I couldn’t look as beautiful as you. Today might just feel a bit unfortunate. Tomorrow will be brighter.
The entire write is completely valid, I don’t mean to minimize your feelings (even if they aren’t accurate 🙄) (seriously, you can count on me to feel your pain🤔) but the ending is freaking fantastic. The complete 180 of distraction with the diversion of a handsome passerby. Genius. Love it! H🌷

Dearest H,
Your beauty is so vibrant and luminescent, going beyond anything as uninteresting and trivial as superficiality!
Yes, my subject matter here is skin deep and yes, when it comes down to it we should all be our own best advocates. However, it's not as easily said AND done. Years and years of being told one thing about yourself really gets ingested during your formative years especially, becoming part of your DNA. Plus, I'm hardly beautiful, H, really. (I'm serious there, it's good makeup and a nice picture) Your words are extremely kind - I sincerely thank you.... I am so grateful for all your sentiments left for me to read and ponder. I can't tell you how much it means to me that you take the time to leave such awesome feedback. I'm motivated so much by it and I'm all smiles that you enjoyed my little poem.
I am so lucky for your DU friendship

Dearest, Lady Blue
I share the same concerns as Honoria. If you are referring to yourself, the only thing ugly about you is the erroneous notion that you are ugly. Let me be your mirror because you obviously don't have one that works. You are beautiful. Your eyes are stunning and your face absolutely beautiful. Do not compare yourself to anyone else. You are uniquely beautiful...so there...no if's, and's, or but's❣❣🌹
Now that we've established that you're a goddess, the poem is well written as usual and it ends with a bit of humor.🐻💞🐰

Re: Re. the grisly misfortune of the way the world works
It's true that the truth in others, of their deep good-ness, sadly is passed by because of a stereotype of what IS supposedly considered beautiful. There's also many concessions automatically made to those that society feel meet that standard, too.... despite not having half the amount of character, intelligence, or morals. It's frustrating when I see it time and time again, that 'mulligan' given because of age or beauty. smh 🤦🏻♀️.. It's been an impactful 'fact of life' my whole life. You see me as pretty or gorgeous.... I wear makeup and I get my hair done to achieve a certain look ...yet, I have body issues and I'm not nearly as physically, 'what is pictured' ... meaning I have a big nose, scars on my face from my accident and on and on.... It's a real avatar, yes. But I also know how to take the best pic I know how.... lol... I'm not making excuses, just explaining... nor am I catfishing either. It's my mind's eye, my experience and my truth. Something that I work on every day.
I appreciate you reading, the list add and all your awesome comments, support and encouragement.

“When people see some things as beautiful,
other things become ugly.
When people see some things as good,
other things become bad.
The Condition to Life wherein a Book is judged by it's Cover is simple a Deterior of What rooted Fear springs out of people to Realize the beauty of the internal Realm. The Forseen is that which most comes across by the People, Because that External Existence is Predominantly Important to the Content to Life; But in All Due Reality it simple State that which we do in the World, Not What we Do when we are alone within ourselves and Realize the Core of the Decisions which we made in the Reality of the Nate/Innate. Hoping that the World will Judge it's Cover of a Book without Ill-manner is all the Core of Proper Judgement, because that which harms is not the judgement; But the Judgements. If We Visualize beauty; Then We Visualize that Maker of Beauty Which is the Existence that we Live by in this Universe Made by Stars and Relayed in the Nature of Steps. Some Rough and Some Calm; But a Walk is a Walk and a Walk Is a Walk. Soon we follow to the Run and See that all Prior before of another Walk is beautiful Altogether. And we Step out of the Superficial so Long as the Person him or Herself Can Walk without being Self-Conscious for being Different. The Norm the World Puts Everybody in is a Simplicity, Not a Reality; the Further People Realize that, The Better the World becomes. If We Must, Judge; and if you Judge, Do not Hate; Degrade, or Persuade Yourself to be better; Higher, or Worthier. Then will the World be better; and we may appreciate what Cover is Essentializing the Inward Beauty to Form the Outward To What it is coming from: Internally and Outternally

The WORLD is ugly. Many people in the world are ugly inside. Many physically beautiful people are ugly on the inside because they are so terribly insecure, so they lash out at others. I will only echo what others have said, you are certainly not ugly, neither outside nor in.
Metaphorically, you hit the nail on the head. Oh what opportunities are missed by judging that books cover. A piece to ponder.

You SO nailed it, E
I know sometimes it can boil down to 'if we could walk a mile in each other's shoes'... Even then, I sometimes feel like that might not be enough. As sad as that is to admit. Perhaps all we can do is our best at putting out some form of beauty into the world as much as possible.... I thank you for reading, leaving your lovely kind and so insightful sentiments and taking the time you have. I am grateful and feel lucky in my good fortune of having your friendship.

This is so eloquent and beautiful, with a magical flow that captivates the senses.
I find there is a paradoxical texture to the piece, in the sense that the poem speaks of what I perceive to be a lack of control, at least on the surface, and yet, the technical & intellectual aspect of your words speaks of anything but this, and masterfully leads the reader through the maze of your thoughts, as you have gained control or always had control.
To me, the world is a hideous monstrosity in many respects. A melting pot of monstrosities even. But the thing about melting pots is they tend to putrefaction and purification in an alchemical transition to maybe the Philosopher’s stone? For them that are able to recognize the appearance and possess the adeptness to stake claim… Which you certainly do and I am supremely privileged to engage in this thought process.
And the swift shift to irony… Quite a glorious achievement.
The philosopher’s stone has been seized because it is both divine and human… A paradox.

At times, we are all paradoxical, Imo .... Our reasons and motivations change, reverse or evolve based on a gazillion different reasons. Not always but sometimes... lol.... just an observation. ;)

This is perfection from a societal perspective! You looked at this phenomenon deeply but also with great humor. That last line was a zinger. You put a spin on what came before that left me laughing. Yet the essential message was personalized and validated. This reminds me of a trip my family took me on to the New Orleans Museum of Art. Driving back over the bridge they talked sarcastically about all the beautiful people there. But you put the sentiment into a pure poetic sizzle. Thank you for awakening me and giving me laughter at the same time.

How many times have we all longed to have that one who we know is out of reach, in a different league. Life is not fair.
1
Re: Re. the grisly misfortune of the way the world works
life is indeed, not fair.
I only wish that we could make it easier on ourselves by not coveting an unobtainable or by making bullshit concessions to those who fit a preconceived mold. It won't ever change, I'm aware... but maybe it can lessen in severity...
A girl can dream... lol..

Re. the grisly misfortune of the way the world works
Wow ... this so resonates ... where to begin ... love the title ... "grisly" ... poetic gold nugget ... great flow a la B ... love the repetition of "ugly" ... it is there ... but does not get monotonous ... like a nagging reminder ... that steals the stage every time ... the poem shares ... questions ... does not preach ... I can feel the ache ... share the ache ... leaving me crying by the last stanza ... you are beautiful dear poetess ... inside and out ...
P.S. love the turn at the end ... that the speaker is also guilty ... reminding the reader/listener that he/she is as well ...

I have felt this in so many ways. They say we have evolved as a society, and yet this way of viewing people - the superficial way - seems to be the new standard. It leaves so many of us feeling unrecognised and irrelevant. It takes a certain bravery to stand in the face of this. But despite popular opinion, I will take depth and a dose of realism any day above a perceived exterior.

I think it's unavoidable it's part of being a human... but knowing that...means we should be able to see the forest for the trees. Pick out the bullshit.... but we usually don't.... sadly.
Maybe it's about trying... or lessening.... that seems doable... Lmfao.
Thank you for reading and leaving your thoughts with me. I find it's valuable in helping to understand motivations.... which helps make me a better writer.... on some days, that is ... ;)

We are all a little ugly on the inside. But it doesn't have to be that way. Very open poem. It made me think about myself how I am imperfect as a person.

Wow... a flashback to this piece, here! Thanks for taking a stroll through the back log.... lol...
I am so glad you took away some self introspection (that's awesome!) and I humbly thank you for taking the time to read and for leaving me your thoughts.
A pleasure ✨

I probably do too much self introspection to be honest but you are welcome. I love reading peoples work especially old stuff
