The kind of day that fills out a life
There are days in life that are unthinkably awful
when you desperately want to hit rewind
go back to before whatever “thing” happened
and claw your way out of your own skin.
There are even a few that are blissful
with loved ones and seashores
days you want to live over again
with music soaring like meteors.
This wasn’t either of those.
It was entirely uneventful.
It was a day with work to be done;
creative, enjoyable, non-spectacular work
a day with songbirds on my morning walk
and dreary rain by afternoon
a day with take out pizza
and kitchen party music onscreen in the evening.
A benevolent day on which to stand
neither sinking below the surface
nor floating up and losing my footing
and all those other types of days
can rest secure on its base
as poetry binds them into a coherent life.
