What is a story?
A story is what happens
when a man with a gun
walks into the room.
It’s as simple as
“The man walked down the street.”
The only effort is
deciding what he does next.
Writers aren’t special,
just practiced, and paid.
They do what everyone does
every day
for free. Except that their stories
aren’t even true.
(Which is probably why they get paid.)

Boy you nailed this one, Jack. I was a journalist at one point and unfortunately our editors always had last say. . .
I feel like the final stanza could use a bit of work as far as form goes. It seemed to trip me up when reading.

I initially had “They do what everyone does every day for free” as one line. Do you think that that would be better?

No; I actually like the context; it's just the form ( for me ) that needs worked on a bit.
