F D I O

For Aha, who suggested the theme. The story is taken from a Greek myth as told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses

And so King Jupiter stealthily raped
the pale nymph Io,
whose kind but stern father, the river god,
had thought her in his care.

But Kings have plans that must be carried out,
libidinal and otherwise. And as he watched
her pale naked form,
rarely touched by natural rays
but kept concealed beneath
a canopy of leaves within
her father’s dense chambers,
he longed to own the hourglass
that stretched from blades to base
and ended at her plump buttocks.

To hide her from his wife
he then transformed that which he coveted
into something few men would:
a great heifer. Silent and alone,
she found the river god again
and gave her father what she could
by way of explaining:
two letters written in the dirt
with clumsy hoof: I O.

The feminine divine -
raped stealthily and openly,
locked and covered up respectively
with wedding bands and widow’s weeds,
with chores and veils and endless pregnancies -
rises like a Grecian miasma
in the kingdoms of the earth
and writes its letters in the dirt: F D.
F D. I O. F D. I O.
