Image for the poem the least of these

the least of these

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch
as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it
unto me.
” Matthew 25:40 KJV

i will thirst
the thirst of others
that life's living streams may flow
where my soul
has longed for waters
whereby will my spirit grow.

i will hunger
with the hunger
of my brothers in the street
that the poor may
starve no longer
while the fat grows sick with meat.

i will wear
the skin of peasants
colour-barred from liberties
privileged
to hues more pleasant
by perceived supremacies.

i will cry
the tears of brothers
whose vexed hearts are torn with pain
—broken fathers
lonely mothers
children by loose pleasures slain.

i am shackled
by harsh shackles
of the prisoner of rage;
let my freedom
leverage miracles
in the walls of every cage.

Christ has died
the death of sinners
that the vilest soul may live;
let me love
to make men winners
by each sacrifice i give.
