the truth behind perfection
you can believe she's self obsessed
that she posts to broadcast perfection
that she's shallow
that she's ignorant
that she only displays selfishness
but that's the surface level
because
she craves validation
and attention that she never received
she posts to pretend
hiding behind a fake arrogance
truthfully
she is incredibly self-pitying
she's hurting in her core
she presents herself well
as a distraction from her insecurities
if you look closely you'll see the pain
the glimmer of tears that slip down her cheeks
the way she frowns when no one is looking
the dark circles that protrude under her eyes
the white smile that is laced with sadness
and discontent for who she is
she is not perfection
she is merely hiding

I understand. I have met such persons. Difficult situations especially if you are young and in a controlling family environment.

many young girls (myself included) feel this urge to be perfect and that's why so many of my poems are about such instances. thank you for the wonderful comment :)
Hiding behind masks is easier than ever now, I suppose. This is very piercing and powerful. I wish there was more 'what you see is what you get'... man, I miss that. I felt this poem and identify completely.

Julia, this is one bit of verse that I can categorize as, "needed to be said." I think so many of us are described with these words. In spite of a put-together exterior we all have hidden pain, shame, and a cast panoply of vulnerabilities. You write truth dear Goddess. Bravissima❣❣

One thing that I have learned in my many years of life is that people will always wear different masks to protect their vulnerabilities. But you need to understand that there will always be two types of people who wear these masks. The first type will wear a mask to keep from being hurt. The second type will wear their masks to do the hurting. The ones that are afraid of getting hurt will wear a mask for each type of emotion they feel has been threatened. These types of masks are for defensive purposes only and can be slowly chipped away to reveal the real identity of the person through a true and sincere heart. Trust will always play a vital role. The ones that wear their masks for hurting others are the ones that are the most deadly and deceptively cold. They wear their mask for offensive purposes. They are the ones that are the true carnivores and predators who know how to play on people's defenses. They know how to act and play the role to make you feel comfortable so that you will drop your guard, You must keep away at all costs. You must also know the difference between the two. Excellent spill my fellow poetess. Maybe I will write a piece about the masks we wear. Never stop writing. -SOTJ-

I'm happy I may have inspired you! For me, its the the former. My mask is only to hide my true and raw emotions to escape the hurt that may come. However, i've experienced many with the latter. Thank you for the most kind and insightful lesson, as i'm still growing and learning!
