Apron strings

she looked out of the window
and wondered at the shadows
how the evening had crept in

the day was chores galore
she thought adjusting her apron
she cut short her dreaming

her wedding had been good
her birth of children
were just fine

but to know his fists
when he was angry
was too painful to ignore
