Encounter with an Eagle
The eagle looked me in the eye
was it contempt I saw
or just the cold dark of a killer
scorning my reflection
This face-off in the dunes
surprised us both
and in a year of moments
all our language bled dry
No stranger to blood you
though we didn't speak of it
while I drank sheen and gloss
you flexed a feathered foot
Tensing your armoury
claws sharp as whippets
musing this trap you sprang
from dread and beckoning sky
One gulp of air and you were home
perfection mastering horizons
to strand me foolish
clumsy-toed in sinking sand
