High Costs of Love

The many hours she spent primping
And trying to look so fine
Will all succumb to fate and time
When the stars of night align

She lies asleep after making love
Spread in trusting repose
His eyes move from her breasts
To the cute curve of her nose

The hour before she was powerful
An animal possessed by lust
Her lover now mourns over her
To do the thing he must

He’s tortured by the love he feels
But knows she’s been untrue
With each of her new betrayals
The costs of this love accrue

Tonight the books will be set right
The debts will all be paid
He holds the tool that will end her life
He kneels and then he prays

Her eyes look up as if through fog
She says, “I love you so.”
He stars into her glowing face
“Yes,” he says, “I know.”

A flash and boom then fills the room
She grabs her chest and cries
Her eyes meet his another boom
She jerks and then she sighs

Limp on the bed where they’d made love
A pile of flesh and dread
No memory of her loves survive
Her lusts are all now dead
