We Rode the Bus Together

A love affair
Many years ago
We rode the same bus
Lived in the same neighborhood
Worked in the same building
Never knew each other

Day after day we talked on the bus
Transferred at Columbus Avenue
Rode downtown together
At the building she went her way
I went mine
Sometimes saw her in the cafeteria

Eventually we had lunch
Offsite at that Mexican place
She had the prettiest eyes
Somewhere between grey and blue
I told her many times
The margaritas didn't need lies

She lived with a guy she was going to marry
I never understood why
They didn't seem in love
We used to make out in my office
Closed the door
She sat on my lap

We made love the first time on a Sunday afternoon
On Friday nights before I went to my beach house
I'd take a taxi to Penn Station
Drop her off somewhere downtown
I never allowed myself to love her
Then she left me and married him

We lost touch for years
Her marriage didn't last
He didn't make love to her like i did
I did things he wouldn't
We found each other years later
Every New Year's Eve I text her a heart
