I didn't want to write a New Year poem
but it's on my mind today
Happy New Year to you poets
may we have a year full of expression
metaphors and flowing prose
deep thinking and release
of coming together in compassion and understanding
standing united should one of us come upon hard days
 
my hope is for a beautiful New Year
families separated united
may we all be thus blessed
picking each other up on sad days
sometimes it takes only one kind thought to brighten a day
 
let our verses be full of power
as we unite here together
in honesty I fear a lot of things
but in my mind I know come what may I have these halls
here I regroup and find my sanity
in a cruel world I find kindness
a sense of security when I can be sure of little else
I am sure of you poets
 
so much love in your hearts
I am greeted with understanding
a family I never expected
in the gift of the underground
