Through the Years
Three decades have passed and I’ve kept track
Of every single poem and prose I’ve composed
Some serve as reminders of a faraway past
And some like coded secrets remain undisclosed
They’ve been the chronicles of my life’s story
Of heartaches and losses, of anger and wrath
They are also a reflection of who I’ve been
Searching for myself in a long and winding path
Perhaps it’s at this age that I’m more nostalgic
Laughing at my younger self for things I did
Crying for incidents when they became tragic
With no excuse but to say, I was just a kid
And maybe those are the lessons I had to learn
To burn a couple of times to fully understand
To yearn and feel the need to improve myself
So I can appreciate the scars on my hands
Whenever I read through the past and cringe
I say “Wally you dumbass, what did you do?”
But I was in a different place back then when
My heart and my mind were a little too blue
But I also have many beautiful memories
Of love and laughter and excellent times
Seeing how I’ve grown and (maybe) matured
But mostly how I like to spit rhymes
So tonight, I raise a glass (of water) as a toast
To a milestone of poems, I’d like to say Cheers!
Here’s to you, Wallyroo and to your future self
A time machine that takes me through the years
