I Read

I've read so many stories growing up
Where woman thrived being dragons
Coiled around towers, fighting those who would be suiters
Where the princess lives as a frog because she loves a frog
I've read stories where woman were warriors
Never taking a knee and never turning away
Where their loved ones depended on their strength
I have these stories hoarded around my heart
My own personal dragons hoard
And sometimes before bed I tell them to myself
To remind myself that I should count my story amongst theirs
I am a warrior, a fighter, a poet
And my gods how many times have I been a frog?
Because I loved one far too much to walk away?
No swords for this gal, no dragons
But trust me... I can look like a dragon
Jewels dripping from my fingers
My teeth just a little too sharp, my mouth too wicked
I never wanted to be a princess or royalty
But how much I wanted to be a fighter
I would rather be a barbarian than someone with no power
And here I am... I am one through and through
Fighting myself and the world daily
Seeking to find my peace, the ending
I don't know if mine will be happy or sad
I'd settle for bittersweet and filled with glory
