Packing
wrapping treasures
in thick brown paper,
reuniting each memory
with shelf-mates
snugly resting
deep inside
their cardboard bed
I remember
it won’t be long now
before I’ll take my leave
of the only place
I ever knew the sun;
the shadows mourn,
casting long faces
where effulgence
once blinded me
with its brilliance
I grieve
at last the chill sets in,
ushered by bitter wind
that never seems
to run out of breath;
the sky weeps
sharp, icy tears
as the moon hides
ashamed
among the clouds;
I scrawl my old (new) name
in bittersweet ink
across the corrugated surface
I surrender
in thick brown paper,
reuniting each memory
with shelf-mates
snugly resting
deep inside
their cardboard bed
I remember
it won’t be long now
before I’ll take my leave
of the only place
I ever knew the sun;
the shadows mourn,
casting long faces
where effulgence
once blinded me
with its brilliance
I grieve
at last the chill sets in,
ushered by bitter wind
that never seems
to run out of breath;
the sky weeps
sharp, icy tears
as the moon hides
ashamed
among the clouds;
I scrawl my old (new) name
in bittersweet ink
across the corrugated surface
I surrender
