Your Wonder

The long set sun has left traces of illumination
Little strands of sunlight tangling in your sweat slick hair, all golden brown
Every pore weeps exhaustion, marking five hours' toil
for a kind of victory that aches like ending, like defeat

He stands before you, foe though you'd never name him, too humble is your heart
And before you he stands, showing his spoils

Silver mirrors to the both of you, and the clear one between -
and this mirror holds the wrong reflection, superficially you
But a smile far too wicked meets your mouth, where your own expression sits so subtle
A mask on madness for now, for always, your grace defying expectation

To every soul who holds you in their heart, you are man and more than man
Those keepers of your wonder who know that you have won

And as you march on and away, battle weary,
gravity cannot fell admiration
Each sound you hear is your own joy rebounding
While deafening silence fills his head
