Angel Eyes (A Witche's Tale)

and so
the man came and told
the frightened woman
of her husband's demise
that soldier
a true man of honor
who called her angel eyes

then when he left
she grabbed a
white cloth
dampened it
a little
wiped her eyes with it
and cried out
to no one

she grabbed up
the string of beads
where they lay in
the wooden box
she kept it in
along with her mittens
and fled the cottage
running deep into
the thick forrest while
choking on her tears

Closing her eyes
she tried
to find some words
to say a prayer
but instead
she cursed God
for he had taken
the one thing
from her
she truly loved

It's because
I am a witch
you have taken
the one person
I can not live without
it must be my
punishment
why else would you
take my man
from me
when I carry
his child inside me

she saw the black bear
from the corner
of one eye
and knew it was approaching
then she cursed
her maker one last time
as she felt a claw
brush her back
she bit a clenched fist
as the black bear
took her down
