Smiling

if they only knew
my biggest smile  
came after my hardest cry  
 
...how long I was behind the door  
before I skipped through the threshold  
 
how many tissues crumbled beside me  
while I distracted the world with my lifted chin  
 
how many tears dragged along my sleeves  
when I felt naked  
 
how many “wonderfuls” and “greats” I vomited  
till I was sick of telling lies  
 
I put on my mask today and boy was I happy,
I didn’t have to smile.
