Image for the poem let me be salt

let me be salt

“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others.”
—Matthew 4:2 ESV

i clamour not to have my name
          immortalised in gold
my service yield i not for fame
                              mercy has been paroled!

my right hand knows not what my left
                                                            conspires or circumvents
                                                                      of affectations yet bereft
                                                                                integrity relents

not to the pride of life, nor yields
          to fleshly lusts, nor bows
                    to appetites pure wisdom shields
                              from him who love bestows

hunger spits in the face of shame
                                                  when daily bread runs scarce
                                                            for accolades of false acclaim
                                                                      doth not the bosom pierce

that eats my hand for want of food
or drinks for ale my tears
or wears my shadow in the nude
                              for fabrics-in-arrears

let me be salt, the earth the sea
                                                  that i may penetrate
                                                            the concourse of man’s destiny
                                                                      if i may liberate

the prisoner from his rigid chains
            the sick from his deathbed
—not unto me for earthly gains
                      compassion’s watershed
