Remembrance Day

In the name of the cross, how it doth gleam!

With a bayonet’s point, its blood is dressed,

For Hitler and Mussolini, who’ve blessed

Every a “Catholic Kike killing scheme,”

Where Pius humbled his knees with esteem.

Contrite, but two-faced, he was the greatest –

Swastikas reaffirmed his faith the best,

Where Fascists and Nazis worship supreme.

And O! How ye can pray and meditate,

But for that “miserable stinking Jew,”

You light your candles and burn him with hate.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer? You weep one martyr?

Merz and the Witnesses - thousands went through

What just one Lutheran had to suffer.

Author's Note
"Ratlines" by Mark Aarons and John Loftus, "The Deputy" by Rolf Hochhuth, and "The Last Three Popes and the Jews" by Pinchas Lapide, are just some of the books presenting different views on the Vatican’s involvement with the Third Reich during World War II. Another contention is that more mainline Protestant groups should have done more to oppose the Reich, while pacifist individuals and sects were being persecuted.  My sonnet of satire relects on all this.
