inksense
“It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool,
than to talk and remove all doubt of it.” ―Maurice Switzer
the burden of new knowledge
little minds can scarce endure.
reason is no small fry when
mental faculties are poor.
‘tis treason to misapprehend
what commonsense abhors
when men most miserable
dig for meaning on all fours.
pale intellect must genuflect
before the poet’s mind,
whose lyric stores shrewd metaphors
dispense in every line.
to circumvent embarrassment,
pretend not to be smart
when put to flight by what bards write
dumb fools to set apart.
young men dream dreams, old men see
visions, dumb men see no light!
sages pay wage for absent minds
pennied by futile plight
were all the world by dearth restrained
where good sense has prevailed,
no poet’s pen could fix the breech
whence inksense tried and failed.
