Red sky at night

Farmers and fishers with saltwater veins
tough as old boots and twice as loyal
gathered, apart but so close together
a screen as the kitchen-party table

listened and wept
as bards applied melodies like a salve
balladeers promised better days to come
the drone sounded its heavy lament
beneath the chant of amazing grace

above it all, radiant firmament of sailor’s delight
sang along in the full range of suitable hues:
shades of
salmon, thistle, mayflower, raspberry,
lobster, dory, apple and fox,
lighthouse, lupin, tractor, buoy,
and blood…

if colours could make sounds
there is no doubt
that the sky was keening
for this land of buoyant souls
