Burning Cloudless Skies, my Death Words Bring

(villanelle)

The burning cloudless skies, my death words bring,
The Joshua, mesquite, saguaro rhyme,
Arroyo lines, the dry bone ravens sing.

The desert hawk, in slowest circles cling,
The mark to show the “contrails” endless time,
The burning cloudless skies, my death words bring.

I breathe the rot, once highland elks’ duffing,
Now diesel smoke, and undertaker’s lime:
Arroyo lines, the dry bone ravens sing.

The world, how fast the rush to its ending,
But I sit still to chant its hard decline,
The burning cloudless skies, my death words bring.

The splendid mustangs run from missions’ string,
From Spanish ghosts the mesas endless climb,
Arroyo lines, the dry bone ravens sing.

In shade of ruined fortress’ shamaning,
I sketch in dust, an ending most sublime.
The burning cloudless skies, my death words bring,
Arroyo lines, the dry bone ravens sing.
