It’s One of Those Affairs You do Your Best

(Quatern)

It’s one of those affairs you do your best,
On Social edges, hoping without hope.
Alone too long, you think love's for the rest,
And that night too, that love’s beyond your scope.

But once or twice, exchanging passing words,
It’s one of those affairs, you do your best
To find her at your side as dinner's served
And suddenly eclipsing all the rest.

In every measured phrase, the words impressed,
In conversation, every world made known,
It’s one of those affairs, you do your best
In each exchange that shows how love is grown.

With every word, a hungry passion fed;
With every passing line, a tongue’s caress;
With every spoken verse, a climax sped;
It’s one of those affairs, you do your best.
