The villain: A story of rejection

Have you ever told someone
How you feel about them
Bare their all to them
And in that very moment
Get rejected?

Have you ever felt how
That moment wrenches
Your heart out
Leaving you in a state of silent pain?

Worst of all when the 'no'
Is not even clear enough
When that person still
Leaves you wondering
If they really meant 'no'

That type of pain
Can consume you
From within
Slowly eating you up
As your thoughts get darker

When you realize that
The person you wanted
To give your love to
Just didn't give you
The respect of clarity

Now imagine being
The person on the other side
Knowing what that pain feels like
Knowing what you have gone through
And here is someone
declaring their love for you

You start thinking about
All the times you were with them
And you can't see any signs
Of you showing them affection
You can't think of any time
You treated them differently
You never tried to string them along
But here they are

Here they are bare
Vulnerable to what you will say

Right there you start to see
Yourself as a villain

'I promised I would never
Cause someone else
The type of hurt I went through'

But here you are

Too harsh and you can scar them
Too soft and they won't get the message
So you choose to respect them
Respect them enough to speak the truth

Watching them frawn in front of you
Watching them hold baack the tears
Knowing that this was inevitable

Realising that you have lived
Long enough to become a villain
In someone else's story

This person hasn't done anything wrong
In fact they are a good person
But Love in the romantic sense
Is just something you cannot give

So now you are sad
Saddened by the hurt
you have brought

Knowing that the line
Has been crossed
And you cannot be around them
That things will be awkward now

Worst of all, you're still looking for love
Yet you just rejected its invitation
Because you don't want to take
Knowing that you'll never give

So you sit there
Feeling like a shitty person
Wondering if it isn't just easier
To be a bad person all the time
Because being good
seems to cause pain

If not for you
Then for those
who fall for you
