When She’s Ready
The desert is so naked in the eyes of many
She was small, hidden, and undetectable
They said, grow up
Little girl, chin up
You can bear it
This mentality is debilitating
But when the rain washed over her
They didn’t see the roots
Of a woman beginning
Cultivating, photosynthesizing
In the shadow of their ignorance
When she’s ready, she’ll be armed
With a voice too loud to ignore
When she’s ready, she’ll be shining
Colorful and demanding
You’ll find yourself running
When she’s ready
She’ll bloom
Like the desert after the April monsoon
The dunes will smile at her
And whisper through the petals
“They weren’t ready”
She was small, hidden, and undetectable
They said, grow up
Little girl, chin up
You can bear it
This mentality is debilitating
But when the rain washed over her
They didn’t see the roots
Of a woman beginning
Cultivating, photosynthesizing
In the shadow of their ignorance
When she’s ready, she’ll be armed
With a voice too loud to ignore
When she’s ready, she’ll be shining
Colorful and demanding
You’ll find yourself running
When she’s ready
She’ll bloom
Like the desert after the April monsoon
The dunes will smile at her
And whisper through the petals
“They weren’t ready”
