THIS UNION

Speak not ill of womankind
for it is through her all
things are defined,
bringing forth life which
she sustains and feeds,
fulfilling all her infants' needs.
She is the one who
creates and sustains.

Yet he carries the seed
like the fruit after flower
he nurtures their growth
each day and hour.
While she gestates
new life within
without him the
cycle can not begin.

This union they create
forges a binding trinity
the miracle of life where
one plus one makes three.

Author's Note
This poem was inspired after discovering I was a descendant of Gerald FitzGerald, 3rd Earl of Desmond, and reading his poem below, but I had to give mankind some credit!

'Mairg adeir olc ris na mnibh'
(translated as 'In Defence of Women').

"Speak not ill of womankind,
‘Tis no wisdom if you do.
You that fault in women find,
I would not be praised of you.

Sweetly speaking, witty, clear,
Tribe most lovely to my mind,
Blame of such I hate to hear.
Speak not ill of womankind.

Bloody treason, murderous act,
Not by women were designed,
Bells o’erthrown nor churches sacked,
Speak not ill of womankind.

.... "
