Neo[n]-natal

You're fluro in a disco room
only you're not
the neon hues and UV lights
aren't here for a good night out

I've barely slept in days
and there will be little sleep tonight
I ache in places that should be healing
but life has other ideas

I miss the warmth of my bed
and watching you breathe beside me
I miss the overly bassy stereo
playing shit songs from the radio
I miss my kitchen that I can never
keep properly clean

I miss almond milk
and last nights left overs
I miss snuggling on the couch
and the smell of your skin nestled against mine

I miss the things you don't think about
when you're not missing them

You're fluro in a disco room
only this isn't a rave
and my heart breaks for the people
who frequent here more than our lone night
at the start of your journey

I wish I didn't have to be here
I wish you didn't have to be here
I wish I wasn't in a waiting room
just waiting for my turn
to feel less pain tonight
while you wear night shades
at the not-a-disco
in a room far away
from where I am right now

This night has been too long
and we're not yet done waiting
for dawn to come and flood our world
with sunlight and whatever the lack
of exhaustion happens to be

I can't wait to go home
but instead I'm dreaming of sleep
in a sterile waiting room
while you sleep with night shades
under a UV light waiting to lose the fluro
from your skin
so we can go home
better than when we came in
