It could be  feeling which persuades them to believe through experience at times for instance a holy roller and their reaction perceived through "the holy spirit" Mind control works it's way in to our minds from infancy almost cultish.  Their need to have a father figure drives them to connect which is why God presumably looks the way we think he does.  I'm tired too finish later this is deep lol
