Pretty (A Nice Dream)
Are you not pretty, am not I;
we see within ourselves
whether we are dumb or bold,
within our minds we dwell.
If pretty is as pretty does
then fish and fowl are so
pretty they couldn't imagine
what anyone but they know.
A world could not be prettier
if waving goodbye to itself
and drowning in its own mirage
so pretty upon its shelf.
The prettiest mouse still runs away
to not be caught although it may
attract the coyest, smartest of cats
nothing more true is prettier than that.
The later it gets, the prettier still
is darkness which descends:
It rises high, that evening sky
as pretty a dream it befriends.
I rise to catch a falling star,
the prettiest one to fall by far,
as pretty nice a flight as it was to me
I'm pretty sure it was only a dream.

Author's Note
Inspired by 'Pretty' by Stevie Smith, one of the most haunting and mysterious poems I have ever read. I tried my best to interpret it. Written for the ' Alone In The Woods' comp

I KNEW this was for Stevie before I saw the hashtag! And I knew exactly what poem it referenced too!
A few things:
[ than ] fish and fowl are so
Did you mean then? Or am I missing the context?
Also,
and drowning in [ it's ] own mirage
so pretty upon [ it's ] shelf.
Gotta watch auto-correct! It'll get you everytime.
Solid entry, PR! Best of luck in the comp.

Thanks for the corrections, I fixed them, I just loved this poem by her, it was one of my favorites with its fathoms of complexities. I thought of her hidden feminism factor in poems, but there was so much of her in this one. I wanted to recreate her prose storytelling style a bit, too. Thanks so much for the encouragememt and RL add :)

That was one meaning, but the original poem was so complex that it also became an irony and an intangible (dream). Thanks for the comment:)
Re. Pretty (A Nice Dream)
PR, you did well in the way you translated the elaborate original. I never knew of Stevie’s “Pretty” till reading yours just now. You’re a shoe-in.

Re: Re. Pretty (A Nice Dream)
The one thing I did differently was use plays on the word, something she didn't do in any of her poems I read, I couldn't resist being a little modern. I like how you said I did a translation of the elaborate original, I wanted to.. Thanks so much for the helpful encouragement and RL add :)

There is something in the mien of this piece I find so charming. It's subtle, delicate delivery and the purity of perception, the wisdom, that it holds.
