Sing a song of Taj Mahal
Sing a song of Tajmahal
a fine nazm or a ghazal
Of this landmark for lovers
Ah, a lover's edifice
Complete with medieval bowers
It's a Mecca for tourists!
Tis sensational, tis exceptional
tis truly a touristy place.
Watch the shimmer of its magnificent marbled dome
Moonlight or sunlight, it glimmers of imperial chrome
It's ironical then
that though Indian-Arabian I am
I haven't yet been to this touristy place
It is truly as they must say, a lover's shrine
a place where hearts duly incline
They find it steamy
I find it dreamy
Oh, I've got to see for myself this touristy place.
Each of the marbled minarets
conceal such romantic secrets
for lovers to silently explore
to admire and to adore
A place human lovebirds couldn't ignore.
Ah you've got to visit this touristy place!
Two famed lovers lie in the legendary vault below
and the stream too it has a romantic flow
It's a lovers haven and paradise on earth
Even dead passions there undergo a rebirth
Ah, rekindle my love for you in this touristy place!
Extol I may this awesome imposing edifice
A greed for pure love is perhaps better than avarice
Löng live the legend of Shah jahan and Mumtaz mahal
Long live love and love like a Moghul
so forever we have this monumental grace!
Yeah take me my luv to this touristy place!

I was actually lucky enough to go to the Taj Mahal and it was breath-taking! You've described it marvelously, and truly done it justice

This is beautifully written, indeed. You have truly captured th overwhelming feeling of Love he intended when he build it. It's a monumental shrine to the most powerful force in the Universe: Love.
The only thing that made me cringe a bit was the use of "luv" in the last line. Other than that, it's as exciting as it is from the perspective of being both overwhelmed and awestruck!

Re: Re. Sing a song of Taj Mahal
Hmm dear but I need to clarify. God in Islam is not put in buildings at all dear, the holy kabah is just a focal point of worship so all Muslims pray towards one unified direction in unity rather than praying in different directions but all Muslims know there is no God living inside the kabah or building,, He lives in the hearts of those that invite Him and is everywhere and right next to you and me. As for the Taj Mahal dear dear it's got nothing to do with God as such, just that I'm proud it's built by a Muslim that's all. In a world that earnestly seems to undermine Muslims we have to show our contributions.
And yeah I like how you put it poetically though, a temple of love . What's the mandala of Buddha I wonder .
Warmest thanks for interesting comment . Happy Valentine's Day.

Dear ZK,
Oh, how you’ve enticed and inpsired a trip to see this magnificent structure. I’ve known only the surface story of the facade and why it was built. The foundation of true romance and everlasting love. What drew me into your piece is the education of the religion and association of architecture and love and religion rolled into one. Wonderfully written and thank you for this insight. It is most appreciated! H 🌷

You have certainly reminded us that this iconic feature of India was literally a work of love, of a man for his wife, and one of Islam's positive contributions. Wonder it has been allowed to stand given the fundamentalist Hindu parties that have been in government.

This is a lovely piece! I too, am often moved to write by places. I love the tension you create between the meaning and history of a place, and the way tourism can cheapen it up. I find that many touristy places still have some magic to them, which is of course, how they got touristy in the first place. Maybe I’ll write a place poem soon too. Thanks for the inspiration!

This was pure joy to read! You created a magic poem in the image of this romantic paradise. Though I've never been there either I could feel the rhythms of the place through your words. Though I am of European background I love Indian and Persian music. I have a collection with some of a fusion between the two. I believe I may have been from that region in a past life.
